This book, doesn’t leave me in my usual fan girling state, it leaves me with something deeper. An emotional connection that tugs at all my emotions at once. It’s when I know I’ve encountered another favourite book.
The plot is perfectly devised. It gives you moments of peril, character driven moments that have you smiling, crying and everything in between. It has these beats like rolling hills. You can’t see over the next hill until you are at the top but you feel every moment of the rise and fall, like tension building in your muscles readying for something. SJM is a wonderful storyteller.
This book captures the feelings you experience when having to start anew in the world. The fear, the worry and ultimately the freedom. Being left with nearly nothing in your life means you can build the one you want from the ground up, even with the emotional baggage of the one you left behind, and we see the full spectrum of this experience in Feyre.
My favourite part is her relationship with ‘the fae that shall not be named’. It’s quirky, playful, taunting, honest, brutal, beautiful and feels utterly real. When she fights tooth and nail for this fairy, you feel her drive in your bones as if it were your own. It hasn’t just happened overnight. There are so many wonderful layers of context to their relationship. We’ve felt every bump along the way and every kind and sarcastic comment. We see their relationship like a road map in our hands and feel the power behind Feyre’s feelings like a true living thing. This is a romance to be reckoned with. Mentally dating a fictional character has never been so true! There is this wonderful blend of sweet, snarky and admittedly spicy that has you wishing they were real, living their life together somewhere.
I loved the first book but this is so much better. It’s emotional, haunting and it connects you to the soul of these characters and the soul of this world. This book left me feeling like I was stood under the night sky dreaming of a better world. To the stars who listen…
