Aurora Rising Review: It was disappointing.
The first third of the book only shows women as un-thinking horn dogs. I love characters that own their sexuality but this was pure gawp. One character, despite being a highly trained individual in intergalactic diplomacy, only ever uses her breasts to save the day. May I add, this happens about 15 times. As I said I love a character who owns it and has almost a vampiric way of controlling a room but this wasn’t that. They just kept using them to get out of scrapes. There were moments where I really liked this character. Quiet, personal moments that were touching but there weren’t many.
Luckily Fin saved the day by doing an equal amount of gawping. I’m not big on sexual objectification but Fin balanced out the gender gap a tad and better yet had a good gawp at both the men and women around him. But his constant sexual comments and innuendos felt like they came from somewhere heartfelt. Fin saves this book in many ways. He has a disability, like me, rare in any book and you could see the defence mechanisms behind his comments. I could see myself, the humour I use at times, deflecting away from the darkness that can sit in any disability. It took time for me to even stand Fin, as his POV came in later, but once in his head, he became my favourite character of the bunch.
Also, the group didn’t feel cohesive. It took until the last 10% of the book for them to even feel like people. There was a moment, after an incident, where I truly felt like I was there. Panting along with them, looking around at each other, not believing we were alive. Unfortunately, that was one of the only emotive moments.
There was also random stuff thrown in there and it felt like a weird, bad, rip off of Firefly at times. To be fair anything similar will always look inferior. There were one or two lovely moments and there were some really interesting visuals, such as the colour seepage during space travel, some hilarious quotes and great dialogue but, in all, I probably won’t read the second book. ⭐️⭐️
