Happy World Oceans Day!
Not, exactly literary themed at first glance, I grant you, but so many stunning books are set in and around the ocean. Imagine a generation or two from now... will those stories fade, as the oceans stop being these mysterious things of beauty and become something so toxic that ‘will be’ writers wouldn’t even be able to step onto a beach? They’d be taught to fear the water, fear the levels of pollution rather than marvel at it. That’s just wrong. There are many reasons conservation is utterly important and amongst that long list is giving people a world to grow up in that inspires them not drowns them in hopelessness.
From the Marine Conservation Society: ‘Our seas are under immense pressure: too many fish are being taken out, too much rubbish is being thrown in and too little is being done to protect our precious wildlife.’ From the Ocean Conservancy: ‘Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean on top of the estimated 150 million metric tons that currently circulate our marine environments.’ This is horrifying!
It’s something to be aware of in what we buy and how we behave. For the sake of all amazing future books to come!
I’d love to hear what some of your favourite books are set in and around the ocean, in full or in part.
Mine are The Wicked King and Circe.
And hey, feel free to do your own Ocean appreciation post and tag me into it so I can share the love.
