Sanctuary by V.V. James is a book I read last year and haven’t stopped talking about since. So, in honour of its US publication day today I thought I’d share with you again what I thought of this book.
“Let’s start with this. This book is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️... It’s a five star of the five stars. This books grabs you right from the start and it has been (a year) since I read this gem and it hasn’t loosened its grip. V.V. James has created a world, not far from ours. A few twists here and there and she has created the perfect storm. In many ways it’s a parable for prejudices we face in modern society. Ongoing slights despite mass historical tragedies. Beyond this amazingly interesting way of exploring the human condition, this book has character at its heart. Relationships, dynamics twisted round in webs that makes you really identify with the characters, it makes you feel for them, root for them and not stop thinking about them in between sittings. I devoured this book in a few days, which trust me for this dyslexic is an astonishing measurement! It is one not to miss, I promise you that. It is one book that I have told all my friends and family about and I’m so glad I have gotten to tell you.”
I wrote this review six months ago and the themes of this book are even more prevalent now. It explores persecution in such an emotive and impactful way. Terrifyingly so.
This genre defying book for me is 100% in my top five books of all time and such an important read for our time.
