Has your TBR 2020 list changed over the last six months? ⠀⠀
Do you religious stick to the list you make or do you let it evolve and change as the year goes on. I’m definitely more fluid. I didn’t originally plan on reading The Wicked King this year and I loved it. I also didn’t plan on reading Strange the Dreamer this year as I love Daughter of Smoke and Bone so much, I think we all have a moment of nerves when we go to read a different series by our favourite authors. I certainly do. It the worry of disappointment. Not that it wouldn’t be amazing but would it be equal to our favourite books ever! That’s a tough bar to reach. But a fellow book blogger talked me into it. She was having the same issue in reverse due to her absolute love of Strange the Dreamer. ⠀⠀
Something else that has changed my 2020 TBR is the recent highlighting of the world’s historic problem with racism. It made me realise how important it is to actively read more diversely. Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron has been on my Goodreads TBR for a while but I didn’t have plans to read it anytime soon. I do now.
Here’s the epic sounding synopsis that hooked me: ‘THERE’S MAGIC IN HER BLOOD. Arrah is a young woman from a long line of the most powerful witch doctors in the land. But she fails at magic, fails to call upon the ancestors and can't even cast the simplest curse. Shame and disappointment dog her. When strange premonitions befall her family and children in the kingdom begin to disappear, Arrah undergoes the dangerous and scorned process of selling years of her life for magic. This borrowed power reveals a nightmarish betrayal and a danger beyond what she could have imagined. Now Arrah must find a way to master magic, or at least buy it, in order to save herself and everything she holds dear. An explosive fantasy set in a West African world of magic and legend with a twist you will never see coming.’
Literature is something that can open peoples minds + improve the world + we all need to start actively seeking diverse voices.
