The Handmaid's Tale Review

What is non-consent? It isn’t always a physical force moving your limbs. Sometimes restraints rest in the mind. Terrifyingly, what did it take to get them there? The Handmaid’s Tale explores this and I can’t speak for the 80s but for today, it is utterly prevalent. It can’t just be me that has noticed the rise of a Gilead attitude online. Posts such as ‘How not to get raped: 1.) Don’t be a slut.’ This is a direct quote... the even more terrifying thing about posts like this is the amount of likes and retweets they are getting. The last few years we have seen how quickly the tide can turn. How quickly Parliament can get suspended and a man with more public racist comments than there are letters in his name can be elected. The reason this book is so horrifying is because it’s so believable. Atwood weaves the next steps seamlessly, giving you shivers down your spine but also a resolve. A resolve, a wake up call, whatever it is it opens your eyes to what is happening around you. Especially important for the next generation. “in a gradually heating bathtub you'd be boiled to death before you knew it.” We luckily have context behind everything we see. The next generation don’t have that luxury. In a slowly reverting world they’d be right in Gilead without so much as a pause. It’s something Atwood covers extremely well. The notion that you only have to tackle one or two generations to get the world you want. Now, this book review may seem like more of an essay or a rallying cry but that is exactly what the book does! She hasn’t just written a compelling, heart wrenching book. She has created a communication device, a tool, a lightning rod for thought. It’s a lesson, motivation, it stirs something in you. Offred’s phenomenal narration has lead to this. The way she confides in you, the gentleness and rawness with which she speaks, it is a warning. She’s speaks from a mind bound in restraints and it is utterly haunting. Let us heed the warnings and stand together. Together we can do amazing things. #EqualRights
