I don’t know what to say. This isn’t my usual genre. I do read a few books a year that aren’t fantasy + have absolutely loved some but I don’t think I even liked this one. I could appreciate the concept + the idea behind the mystery was fascinating but it just didn’t take me. It’s set in a time period where men say ‘good heavens chap’ + women mostly say nothing. You can see how it could be draining.
A big no, no, happened too. There’s a rapist + due to the era, it’s barely addressed. Everyone knows he’s a rapist but because he’s a ‘friend of the family’ + a ‘well to do man’ they let him terrorise people. I know it’s set in a time period where this disgustingly was the norm BUT, you are writing it for modern readers + I feel strongly that this character should’ve been handled differently. I thought maybe there’d be some element of justice but no.
I’ll tell you one thing I did like, as I don’t like focusing solely on negatives. I liked the layering of personas within one body. For context, a man with amnesia wakes up in a different body each day + is tasked with solving a murder in a ground hog day style challenge. Every evening the day resets + when he falls asleep, he’s transferred to another host whose personality seeps through into his.
I’m really conflicted with how to review this book. I hate giving bad reviews + I have to acknowledge that I’m probably not the best person to do it but it’s not a book I would recommend if you are into the same books I am. he time period overtook what could have been an intriguing book but it ended up just being off putting + the ending was just overkill with twist after twist being thrown in within a short time span.
I’ve met the author + the amount of work that went into it is astonishing. That’s why I hate giving negative reviews. The time I spend on it doesn’t equate to the years of hard work that goes into it. In particular I know this book, having listened to the author, was planned out extensively. Every minute of every characters’ day was planned in order to keep things straight.
So, take this review with a pinch of salt but its probably a one star. #BookReview
