Samantha Shannon has a really lovely way of writing narration and an incredible way with words. Paige feels truly real. Her internal dialogue is organic, grown as if she were a real person, having lived in the real world.
Yes, she is young but she is smart and brave, but not in the ridiculous way some young characters are portrayed as if it is a super power. No, Paige’s brave is born of strife, of intelligence and of friendship. She doesn’t leap because that is what young heroes/heroines are supposed to do in books. It comes from somewhere. It feels anchored to something. She is built of these intricate layers and you feel them in everything she says, her life’s context shining through.
Her youth doesn’t diminish her emotional depth, her intelligence, her desires. You feel the strain she has between want and leadership. It’s a breath of fresh air. As any young woman knows, we are often shown to be 2D, and unfortunately what happens in our society often poisons literature as well but Paige has broken these misconceptions of youth and I thank her for it.
I do wish there was one or two more quiet moments. The moments that speak volumes in what isn’t being said between two characters. It’s what made me fall in love with the first book. Paige’s relationships are so sweet and strained that the whole room fills with tension. Especially her relationships with Warden and Nick. But to be fair, I would have an entire book dedicated to Paige and her relationships so it’s a bit unfair of me. This book is absolutely packed full of action but the emotional impact of what is happening to her and those around her isn’t forgotten along the way, I just love those moments so much.
This book is absolutely action packed and Shannon has this wonderful rhythm to the way she writes. Each segment of the book has these beats that make for a smooth and breath-taking story. It feels almost cinematic in how the plot unfolds itself in the most satisfying way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Can’t wait for book four!
