I was excited when I heard this book was a story within a story following a man who finds his life written in the pages of a book, as that’s what life is, we are all the lead of our own stories with intersections in others. Some stories living on bright and loud for all to hear and others quietly wait to be rediscovered so the premise had me itching to get started but as I read the book lost its way. The ending didn’t feel like an accumulation of all the events from all the tales, it felt completely thrown together, coming up with notions and ideas that made no sense but landed all the characters near the same point. Some tales in the end felt utterly pointless in telling. There wasn’t much conflict in the tale either, it didn’t have this driving force that spurs the characters to take action, it was all fairly casual. Don’t get me wrong, there were many moments of the book that felt wonderful and magical and the voices of narration have this slow melodic way of telling the story and it was enthralling at times but it also easily led to confusion. This book has me stumped about how I should feel. There are bits I really enjoyed but others I found too contrived. I think its one of those books that sings to particular people, leaving them feeling understood and warm but for me it wasn’t and that’s ok. So, read it, experience it for yourself. You may be one of those people and it may change you completely. We all know books have the power to do that. So, give it a go, and let me know what you think.
I always find it hard to give ratings as I can never decide but I think a 3.5 ⭐️ for Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea.
