At first, I was worried I wouldn’t connect to Marcus. He was never in the forefront of the other books for me. I was too obsessed with Matthew, Diana and the gem that is Gallowglass. So, as this book is mainly from Marcus’ perspective, I was apprehensive but I should have fought through + read this book earlier. It’s real, raw + guttural. We get an in-depth look of what it is to be a vampire + what I love about it is that it doesn’t follow the trend of softer formed vampires or the other end of the spectrum of the hyper sexualised ones either. Yes, sex is an important element in this book but it’s done in a way that feels true to a creature of flesh + bone. The evolution of human to vampire is so cleverly aligned with that of human puberty that it feels utterly relatable. It was one of my favourite parts of the book, getting a front row seat to the hardships a new vampire faces from both Marcus’ + Phoebe’s perspective. It’s been discussed before but this book thoroughly explores the gritty aspects of it + it’s something to really bite your teeth into.
I loved diving further into these characters and discovering new things about their very long histories. Such as (SPOILER) Matthew leaving Marcus effectively in his infancy, I never saw that coming. But it makes sense. After what happened with his first child, Matthew wouldn’t feel capable of raising him. The way Harkness has written the plot and the intersection of the characters you learn far more about all our beloved characters, not just Marcus, Phoebe + Diana whose POVs it is written in. But Marcus’ life was far harder than I had realised. His tale melted my heart, especially reading this during our own time of hardship + isolation, you truly connect with his life + it’s a book not to be missed.
It is the perfect blend of past, present, turmoil + hope. With a nice slice of Mattana + the twins on the side.
I finished it a week ago + I still miss the characters. The ending was sweet + the journey was perfect. It leaves you with such a sense of fulfilment but with a deep desire for more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
